Gestational Surrogacy

Surrogacy is considered to be a viable solution when the parents can’t bear the child owing to the number of factors like the mother’s ill health or some other medical or personal reasons. It is the right choice for those who are not able to conceive but crave for a baby.

Surrogacy Can Be Mainly Considered To Be of Two Types:

Traditional and Gestational Surrogacy.

Traditional surrogate mother gets the father’s sperms artificially inseminated. However, she remains the biological mother of the baby on the other hand when a woman carries a pregnancy created by in vitro fertilization in her womb and delivers the baby for another couple, and it is termed as gestational surrogacy. This woman is not related to the baby. That’s why she is also known as a Gestational Carrier. The embryo may be created with donor’s eggs or sperms or intended parent’s eggs or sperms. Different arrangements will bring different results.

It is important to realize here that the procedures involved are different for Gestational as well as Traditional Surrogacy.

(1) The Difference in Technique:

IVF or In Vitro Fertilization technique is used to create the embryo in gestational surrogacy, whereas traditional surrogacy uses Intrauterine Insemination. The significant difference between the two methods used is that in traditional surrogacy the procedure does not involve the egg retrieval from the intended mother or egg donor as the surrogate’s eggs are being used which are already present, making it a more straightforward technique.

(2) Need of an Egg Donor:

In traditional surrogacy, one does not have to look for the egg donor while in gestational surrogacy, if the intended mother’s eggs are not healthy enough, then one needs an egg donor as well.

(3) More Emotional Complications:

Traditional surrogacy is less preferred and thus less common due to the emotional factor of the surrogate being the genetic mother. This situation can be complicated and even result in legal conflicts, and the intended parents may have a limited choice in choosing the surrogate as well as the Surrogacy Agency.

(4) Less Common:

Traditional surrogacy may not be allowed in your country or state by the law, because of the complexities involved due to the baby being genetically related to the surrogate. Many states may not permit traditional surrogacy.

As intended parents, it is essential to make a careful and prudent choice so that one does not land up in too many emotional or legal complexities which can lead to disappointments. Consulting one’s surrogacy agency and clearing one’s doubts in detail, including knowing the surrogacy laws is very crucial for the prospective parents.
