What’s the difference between a Professional MBA program and an Executive MBA program?

Executive and Professional MBA programs provide two pathways to the students earning an MBA Degree. Professional MBA programs are specifically designed for students who do not have basic prior business leadership experience, whereas Executive MBA Programs require five or more years’ experience in administrative or managerial roles.

Professional MBA vs Executive MBA Programs

Executive and Professional MBA Programs both provide instructions and training in significant areas of business administration, including finance, accounting, marketing, project management, and operations. Both the programs are designed to accommodate students who are working full or part-time and to provide knowledge and skills to those students in order to boost their careers.
Professional MBA programs basically target the working professionals who do not have enough managerial experience, while Executive MBA programs are targeted towards the professionals who have spent several years in a business leadership position; (approximately 5-10 years)

Professional MBA Curricula VS Executive MBA Curricula

Another key difference that can be spotted between the executive and professional MBA programs is the focus and level of the curricula. In a two year MBA program students finish introductory coursework in business areas during the first year and move on to more advancement in the second year. A professional MBA program is a pretty traditional MBA program that has basically been structured to accommodate working professionals. It also provides the same range of specialized and introductory coursework in a format that enables students to enroll part-time and fulfill the requirements while continuing to work.

Executive MBA Programs serve the students who have at least five years of practical experience working in business management, which enables these programs to omit a part of the introductory coursework that would otherwise be necessarily essential to an MBA Program. Well, as a result, some of the Executive business programs have lesser courses than Professional and traditional MBA programs.

Admission Criteria for Professional and Executive MBA Programs

The transparent area of distinction between Professional and Executive MBA program is the admission criteria. While admission policies differ by programs Executive MBA programs are unique, in that applicants must have sufficient experience in business management, leadership and administrative role and the required expertise may range from five to ten years, depending on the program. The Executive MBA program is specifically designed for the students who are familiar with the working environment of the business administration, whereas, in contrast, the Professional MBA programs may not require students to have any work experience.

Accreditation for Professional and Executive MBA Programs

Just like the traditional MBA programs, business schools with Professional and Executive MBA programs can also apply and receive accreditation from three non-profit and independent organizations, the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE).
